This initiative was born with the desire of bringing the automotive and competition world to the students of training cycles
The participants will face real challenges to design and manufacture a kart prototype, being able to generate the necessary financial support for the project
The final competition will be held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with performing static and dynamic tests
Barcelona, 31 October 2017.- The Sociedad de Técnicos de Automoción (STA), in collaboration with the Clúster de la Indústria d’Automoció de Catalunya (CIAC) and the Federació Catalana d’Automobilisme (FCA), organizes the Kart Academy. This new initiative, which is a project of Motorsport2020.cat (integrated by CIAC, Clustermoto and Indescat), is based on a competition between teams composed by students of Intermediate and Advanced grades of Automotive Vocational Training institutes and schools. In this regard, the students will design and manufacture a kart with the objective of ending up competing through different tests that will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Montmeló).
The Kart Academy has been presented this morning at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya by Vicenç Aguilera, President of the CIAC and Project Leader of Motorsport2020.cat; Carles Grasas, President of the STA, Joan Ollé, President of the FCA; and Robert López, Vice-President of the Formula Student and the Kart Academy at the STA.
During the official presentation, the agreement has been signed between the entities that are part of the project and it has been highlighted that this initiative was created with the aim of bringing the automotive and competition world to the students of vocational training in a practical way, through a project in which they will face real challenges to conceive, design, develop and manufacture a kart within the limits of a regulation, being able to generate the necessary financial support.
A global project
During the competition of the Kart Academy, students will develop a global project in which they will work as a team and will have to face situations of different disciplines, such as seeking economic financing, technological solutions, commercial or security aspects, with the objective of creating a kart prototype with which they will have to pass different tests. The competition has two categories depending on the engine used: Kart with internal combustion engine and Kart with electric motor.
The first edition of the Kart Academy will be developed in a pilot program, with a total of 15 teams, with no limit of participants per team and with the possibility of being integrated by students of training cycles in Automotive from different schools or institutes. Each team will be formed by a teacher, who will act as a tutor, and by students enrolled in a course of Intermediate and Advanced grades, among which a team leader and two pilots (who must have a minimum age of 16 the day of the tests) will be appointed. The registration of the teams is open until December 22, 2017.
Final competition at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
On June 30, 2018, the final competition will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with all the participating teams, where they will be able to demonstrate their creativity and their knowledge and where all the projects carried out will have the possibility to be evaluated objectively. Each team must present and defend the design of their vehicle and it will be assessed how the specifications have been met, as well as the process used to reach the final result through a series of static and dynamic tests (no race will be held).
The static tests will consist of the technical inspection of the vehicle and the presentation of the project to the judges. To perform the dynamic tests, all vehicles must pass a technical inspection in which the commissioners will verify that the vehicle is developed in accordance with the regulations of the competition and complies with all the safety regulations established by the Federació Catalana d'Automobilisme. The dynamic competition includes braking, resistance, acceleration and slalom tests, in order to assess the behavior and reliability of the vehicle built by the teams.
